At Long Lost

Many years ago, I was in a relationship with a trickster. Even before we dated, he loved to play tricks on me. One night, I was out babysitting. (I believe it was April 1, 1995 but I'm not sure because with him, any day could be April Fools Day.) My college roommate was home, supposedly holding down the fort. When I arrived home very late, she was still up. Being the in-bed-by-10pm kind of girl, this was unusual. We small talked about the night and as I wiped my hands on my towel, a few foam peanuts fell to the floor. I picked them up, puzzled as to where they'd come from. I started to climb into bed, only to discover styrofoam peanuts between my sheets. And under the fitted sheet. And in my pillowcase. My roommate and I fell on the floor laughing as I opened desk drawer after desk drawer to find them stuffed with peanuts. I found them in shoes, in pockets, in the college-sized refrigerator. I found them in every place imaginable. It was the gift that keeps on giving as I found them for weeks and months after that in pockets, and books, and other odd places.

Unbelievably, I found one about a year ago in the pocket of something. I'm sure I'd worn it between 1995 and now, but sometimes when I found them, I'd just put them back for another laugh on another day.

I sell pearls sometimes during the summers. I put little pieces of paper in the pearl sachets with a price on them. And I find these pieces of paper all over the place. I just pushed away from the computer and stood up and found one. How long it had been hanging onto me today and from where it was dangling, I have no idea. Ha ha!
